It annoys me. You hear people talk about the neural basis of addiction or bullshit like that and you just think, why are you bothering? Just stop and stay stopped. I stopped drinking recently. It's not that difficult if you want to. If you're really addicted to something unpleasant, like heroin, decrease your dose and then stop, to avoid nasty withdrawal. Write a list of why you want to stop and another list of things that you're going to do with all the time and energy that you spent on your addiction and stick it to your fridge with a magnet. I'm not straight edge but addiction is seen as a massive insoluble problem whereas building a car that doesn't pollute isn't. Maybe the real problem is finding another industry for Afghanistan.
That's not meant to sound like an attack on people who are addicted to drugs, it's more the way that policies are made.
