It's a knotty problem. Different terms for different uses, would be my preference. When talking about myself I've recently leant towards saying "I have mental health difficulties" or "I sometimes have mental health difficulties". Challenges is quite now, but I prefer difficulties. Or do I? It's worth thinking about, I guess.
